Canoe down the Chassezac from the campsite

Canoe down the Chassezac

Staying at Camping Lou Rouchetou means having direct access to one of the most beautiful canoeing spots in the Ardèche. Less frequented than the classic Ardèche, the Chassezac river offers wild, accessible routes suitable for all levels. Ideal for discovering nature in a different way, on the water.

A START
in the immediate vicinity of the campsite

Rental bases are located less than 1 km from the campsite, which can be reached on foot in just a few minutes. You’ll find all the equipment you need for canoeing down the Chassezac: two-seater or single-seater canoes, life jackets, paddles, watertight containers for your personal belongings, and safety instructions from professionals.

Several routes are available, ranging from 7 to 10 km, depending on your level and preferences. Routes can be organized as half-day or full-day tours, with departures usually in the morning or early afternoon. The return trip is taken care of by the base, which provides transport back to the starting point. In high season, advance booking is strongly recommended, especially for groups or families.

The campsite reception can help you organize your outing and guide you towards the most suitable route, depending on the level of the river or the age of the participants. It’s an activity that’s easy to get into, requires no particular physical condition, and allows you to discover unspoilt natural spots that are often otherwise inaccessible.

An accessible descentfull of charm

The Chassezac winds its way between limestone cliffs, carving out its bed in a lush, mineral setting. It’s a peaceful river, perfect for an introduction to canoeing while enjoying remarkable scenery. The descent is gentle, with a generally calm current, making the activity accessible even to children and beginners. A few small rapids punctuate the course to add a little spice, without representing any real danger.

Along the way, you can take breaks to swim in the clear waters,
picnic in the shade or explore the wild riverbanks, including the campsite’s private beach. Some stretches take you through more incised areas, offering spectacular views of cliffs, rock formations or birds nestling in crevices.

This canoe trip is often cited as one of the highlights of a stay in southern Ardèche. It’s fun, refreshing and close to nature, ideal for young and old alike.
