Camping near Naves, an Ardèche village of stone, silk and silence
Just a few minutes from Les Vans and Camping Lou Rouchetou, the village of Naves clings to the hillside. Classified as a “village of character”, it is one of the hidden treasures of the southern Ardèche. Cobbled streets, blond stone houses, panoramic views of the Cévennes: here, everything invites contemplation.
A DISCREET HERITAGE
but striking
A former silkworm production center, Naves has preserved its typical architecture: lauze roofs, vaulted passageways, ancient fountains… Stroll around and you’ll discover the Saint-Jacques church, winegrowers’ houses and remarkable views of the surrounding hills. You can’t just visit the village: you have to feel it, in the silence of its alleyways and the warmth of its walls.
Every detail seems frozen in time: a carved lintel, a narrow cobbled lane, an overgrown stone staircase. The inhabitants, discreet but welcoming, contribute to the upkeep of this place, which has preserved its soul without artifice. Local artists and craftsmen sometimes take over the houses to exhibit their work during the summer season.
Every summer, Naves also plays host to intimate exhibitions and concerts, in an authentic, unspoilt setting. It’s a popular spot for photographers, artists… and walkers in search of peace and quiet. For heritage enthusiasts, it’s a little-known gem to be discovered slowly. It’s not unusual to come across visitors standing still, simply captivated by the beauty of a wall, a door or a ray of light filtering through the centuries-old stones.
An easy detourfrom the campsite
From Camping Lou Rouchetou, Naves can be reached in just 10 minutes. Access is by car, or on foot for the more motivated, via a pretty climb from Les Vans. The village has no shops, but is perfect for a 1-hour visit, followed by a refreshing walk along the banks of the Chassezac river.
The road leading to Naves already offers a glimpse of the local charm: olive trees, dry-stone walls and unobstructed views of the Cévennes. On arrival, a small free parking lot provides parking right next to the village center. All that’s left to do is let yourself be carried away by the walk, camera in hand or sketchbook in pocket.
For those who like to combine culture and nature, the walk can be extended to the Bois de Païolive, or a relaxing break at the campsite bar-restaurant. The staff at reception will be able to advise you on the best times to avoid the crowds or take advantage of the light at the end of the day. Whether you’re on your own, a couple or a family, this short but rich getaway will give you a real feel for the secret and poetic Ardèche.
