A HERITAGE SITE
exceptional
Listed as a Monument Historique, the 12th-century church of Notre-Dame de Thines attracts lovers of Romanesque art and history. Built entirely of schist stone and local marble, it overlooks the valley in a strikingly tranquil setting. Around it, a few stone houses and an inn make up the heart of the village, accessible only on foot from the parking lot below.
A visit is well worthwhile: the roads leading to the church are winding, but each bend offers splendid panoramic views of the Cévennes ardéchoises. In season, concerts of sacred or classical music are sometimes held in the church, adding a spiritual dimension to the experience.
The village is also home to a small heritage house, where elements of rural life in the past are on display, along with explanations of the site’s history. The peacefulness of the area, the absence of traffic and the raw beauty of the landscape make Thines a popular destination for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle. Even at the height of the season, tranquillity reigns, where you can reflect, draw or simply soak up the atmosphere. A unique stopover at the crossroads of spirituality, heritage and Ardèche nature.
